Marilyn Monroe's Personal Statement of

Receipts, Withholds & Disbursements

May 1962

From the personal files of Marilyn Monroe:  A nine page typed document issued by City National Bank titled "Statement of Receipts, Withholds & Disbursements / May 1962;" itemizing all of Marilyn's expenses for the month of May, 1962, including specific dollar amounts paid to Paula Strasberg, John Strasberg, Dr. Greenberg, Eunice Murray, Cherie Redmond, Rudy Kautzky, Dr. Lee Siegel, Dr. Phillip R. Reuben, Dr. Edward J. Simons, Hazel Washington, Mr. Golden, and Norman Jefferies, among others.

On May 19, 1962, Marilyn made what is quite possibly her most famous public appearance ever when she sang "Happy Birthday Mr. President" to President John F. Kennedy at Madison Square Garden.  Marilyn's expenses associated with the performance are annotated on this statement.

Also noted are the businesses where Marilyn spent money such as Saks Fifth Avenue, Jax, La Scala, Jurgensen's, The Motion Picture Relief Fund, Sherman Oaks Veterinary Clinic (likely for "Maf"), Bedford Prescription Pharmacy, Schwab's Pharmacy, among many other expenditures.  Also noted are Carey Cadillac Limousine Company expenses.

During this period, Marilyn spent thousands of dollars decorating and renovating her new home, located at 12305 Fifth Helena Drive in Brentwood, CA.  This document outlines expenses from May for home improvements, including new kitchen cabinets, plumbing, masonry, red fabric from Norman Norell for Marilyn's living room sofa, the purchase of Mexican tiles and wood furniture (including shipment from Mexico), installation of tiles, the purchase of a kitchen stove, dishwasher and refrigerator (with a reference to the dark blue porcelain glaze applied to the sides of the refrigerator so that it would match the blue kitchen tiles), trees for the garden, carpeting, and even the iron grills for the windows (which are still on the house today).

Overall, this is a fascinating account of how much money it took in just one month for Marilyn to live as "Marilyn."
